Spectacular Nighttime Display

On July 14-15, 2012, residents of Northern California were treated to a spectacular display of the Northern Lights. The phenomenon, caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's magnetic field, was visible as colorful auroras in the night sky.

Photographer Brian Aguirre captured a stunning image of the aurora from a plane on March 8, 2012. The photo shows vibrant greens and reds dancing across the sky. "It was breathtaking," said Aguirre. "I've never seen anything like it."

The Northern Lights are typically associated with higher latitude regions, such as Alaska and Canada. However, on rare occasions, the solar activity can be strong enough to cause the aurora to be visible in lower latitudes, such as California.

The July 14-15 display was particularly strong, and auroras were visible as far south as San Francisco. The combination of the aurora with numerous shooting stars created a truly unforgettable experience for those who witnessed it.

While the Northern Lights are a relatively common occurrence, they are always a special treat to behold. The July 14-15 display was a reminder of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the night sky.
