Prostate Cancer Diagnoses Should Include Mental Health Support Doctors Urge

Prostate Cancer and Mental Health: Study Findings

New Research Highlights Mental Distress Risks

A recent study conducted by the University of South Australia has revealed that a significant proportion of men are at risk of experiencing mental distress following a prostate cancer diagnosis. The study, which examined data from men for five years prior to and five years after diagnosis, found that up to 40% of men faced mental health challenges.

Depression Increases Mortality Risk

The research also indicated that men with prostate cancer who experienced depression had a 39% higher risk of all-cause mortality. Additionally, those who had a history of emotional problems were 26 times more likely to die from their disease.

Psychological Burden and Treatment

Urological oncologist Miguel Ángel Jiménez-Ríos emphasizes the importance of addressing the psychological burden associated with prostate cancer. He notes that it is essential for patients to seek support and treatment for mental health concerns, as these can significantly impact both their overall health outcomes and quality of life.
